NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF PROFESSIONAL ENVIRONMENTALISTS (NAPE), Kampala, Uganda
The National Association of Professional Environmentalists (NAPE) is a fully registered NGO in Uganda and is mandated to carry out its activities countrywide. It was founded in 1997 by a group of professional environmentalists in response to a wide range of environmental problems in the country that require serious and urgent attention. NAPE’s activities include; Promoting Professionalism in Environmental Management in Uganda, Awareness raising, Promoting Biodiversity Conservation, Promoting Sustainable Water Resource Management, Lobbying and advocacy on environmental issues and disseminating information, among others.
From the time of its inception, NAPE has been able to participate in a number of activities where it has made great achievements in environmental management; including influencing environmental policies. Some of the achievements include:
- Participating in debates against the spraying of Lake Victoria waters with herbicides to eradicate the water hyacinth where success was made in stopping official spraying of this crucial water resource.
- Lobbying and advocating for the conservation of more than 3,000 hectares of forest reserves in Bugala Island in Kalangala district on Lake Victoria which had been ear marked for de-gazettement in favour of a Palm Oil Project.
- Participating alongside with the local communities in advocacy against de-gazettment of Butamira Forest Reserve; catchments of Lake Victoria although, the reserves were later given away for sugar cane plantation
- Publishing a bimonthly environmental magazine that is widely distributed to policy makers in the country, highlighting various environment issues in Uganda, the East African region and other parts of the world
- With support from FAO-NFP and through the Forest Working Group, NAPE has on two different occasions implemented lobby activities in Uganda for the effective integration of forest farming in a number of districts in the lake basin under the National Agricultural Advisory Services (NAADS) programme
Activities being implemented
- Construction of Ecosan toilets and putting up of water tanks at Naminya Village
- Training of artisans on ecosan construction
- Land Rehabilitation activities and rehabilitation of community wells/springs
