OSIENALA (Friends of Lake Victoria) was established in 1992 as a national NGO with its head office in Kisumu City in Nyanza province, Western Kenya. It started as a membership organization by local communities who live and drive their livelihoods from the resources of Lake Victoria and its environs. OSIENALA’s environmental education department has embarked on a critical role of positively changing the behavior towards environmental issues. While the department acknowledges the fact that such environmental education should be made available to all generations, education targeted at the young generation is undoubtedly the most important and the most effective.

This is a Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) supported programme being implemented by OSIENALA in partnership with Organizations from East Africa Community: Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi. The programme has been in operation from 2005 and now is in its second phase that has been implemented for a period of three years between 2008 and 2012. In 2008, Stichting Het-Groene Woudt (SHGW) and ICS came up with an integrated model combining; a commercial tree farming enterprise and a social initiative focusing on promoting small-holder tree farming, community livelihood projects and civic driven child development. The commercial and smallholder interventions will use “state of the art” technology that aims at increasing the forest cover of the areas while reducing poverty through generation of income.
