Recent drastic increase of human activities at beginning of this century is now causing serious degradation of the environment not only at local and regional level but on a global scale.
In order to prevent the worldwide disaster in the near future there is need for a multidispinary and integrated approach targeting aspects such as technology, law, economic, social, ecology, culture and politics. Equally there is need for change of attitude and lifestyles to coincide with the principles of sustainable development. In this respect, OSIENALA's Environmental Education Department has now embarked on a very important role of positively changing human behavior towards environmental issues. While the department acknowledges the fact that such environmental education should be made available to all generations, education targeted at the young generation is undoubtedly the most important and the most effective. To achieve this, the department's main task is to establish centre facilities at OSIENALA to aid in practical learning for all schools as well as other community members.
OSIENALA's Environmental Education Department tackles a wide range of problems related to the biophysical environment, socio economic and health issues. These are highlighted below
Biophysical issues
· Solid waste management, Water pollution and water management, Air pollution, Deforestation and devegetation,
Poor land use practices, Loss of biodiversity, Wetland degradation, Exploitation of natural resources (quarrying, sand harvesting etc), Soil erosion, Unsustainable fishing methods
Health issues
· HIV/AIDS, Occupational Health, Water borne diseases, Malaria, Malnutrition
Economic/social issues
· Poverty, Lack of active involvement or citizen participation on environmental issues, Lack of understanding of political and legislative system
OSIENALA has now opened its doors to all learning institutions to visit the research and education center and make use of its resource facilities and highly trained staff. This will give students from primary, secondary and tertiary institutions an opportunity to learn and carry out research work in a real life environmental setup. In addition OSIENALA is currently in the process of acquiring a motorboat to enhance learning by taking out students for excursions to various islands..

In this way, they shall be able to handle environmental issues with a knowledgeable mind. This programme focuses on an organized school approach.
Ecological studies: The programme mainly focuses on wetland management and aquatic life.
Forest and forestation The lake region's forests are on the downward trend and therefore there is need to actively sensitize and involve the community in forest management.
